Which level should I have for the Mentawai surf trip?

Our Mentawai trip is suited for pre intermediate to intermediate surfers.
You should be able to:
 • Paddle out confidently
 • Catch your own waves
 • Surf independently without being pushed
 • Feel comfortable in reef environments

There’s a big myth that Mentawai is only for pros. Reality? There are plenty of mellow, playful reef waves that are perfect for progression if you choose the right spots and surf them at the right tides.
That’s exactly what we do.

We split the group by level, choose waves carefully, and focus on repetition, confidence, and wave selection, not charging waves beyond your comfort zone.

How are the waves in Mentawai?

The Mentawai Islands are known for some of the best and most consistent waves in the world, offering a variety of reef breaks with perfectly shaped, mechanical waves. You’ll find everything from hollow barrels and fast, rippable walls to long, more playful waves, making it a dream destination for intermediate to advanced surfers. Most waves break over coral reefs, so confidence in the water and good wave awareness are important.

We choose to run our Mentawai Performance Surf Trip in May and October because these months offer ideal conditions—powerful, high-quality waves without the extreme swells of peak season. The biggest swells typically hit from June to September, which can be challenging for intermediate surfers. May and October sit at the shoulder of peak swell season, meaning:
 • Consistent, well-formed waves that aren’t overwhelmingly big.
 • A variety of conditions, making it great for both shortboarders and confident longboarders.
 • More manageable lineups compared to the busiest months.
 • Still plenty of power and perfection, but with better opportunities for surf progression.

These months provide the perfect balance of quality waves, good conditions, and a more comfortable learning environment, ensuring you get the best experience possible. Question 3

Is this trip for shortboarders or longboarders?

Accepted Answer

Our Mentawai Surf Accelerator Program is designed for intermediate to advanced surfers, and most waves in the region are better suited for shortboards. However, if you're a longboarder, you can definitely still join! We will do our best to find waves that are more suitable for longboarding, though keep in mind that many breaks in the Mentawais have steeper take-offs and faster sections.

We also highly recommend bringing a mid-length board as a versatile option, especially for days when the conditions might be more challenging for longboards. If you're unsure whether this trip is the right fit for your board type and surf level, feel free to reach out—we’d be happy to chat and help you decide!

Question 4

Am I too old or too young for this?

Accepted Answer

Many of our first-timers are concerned about this, so you are not the only one asking this question!

About 80% of our guests are aged 25-55, with most in their 30s and 40s. But age is just a number to us! Everyone is welcome. We focus on surfing progression and good times. Some enjoy a drink at sunset and might go out once or twice, but it's not a party scene at all.

What happens if I have to cancel?

Accepted Answer

We understand that life can be unpredictable, so we've got you covered!

If you cancel your booking at least 3 months before the trip's departure, you will receive a full refund (excluding the deposit). If you cancel between 60 and 90 days before departure, we can offer a 50% refund of the balance payment (excluding the deposit).

After this period, we are unable to offer refunds, as accommodation and other services have already been paid for.

However, we always encourage you to find someone to take your spot. If successful, we will fully refund your payment (including the deposit), minus a $250 administration fee.

We will also do our best to help you rebook your spot, but the less notice we have, the harder it becomes to find a replacement. While we often have waiting lists, we cannot guarantee that your spot will be filled. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to find a replacement in order to receive a refund.
